PART TWO

CHAPTER TWELVE

Blackchurch Guild

The sun was just starting to light up the eastern horizon as Fox finished his tale.

As he’d predicted, it took everything out of him to relive those days that had been the catalyst for him to come to Blackchurch. He was pale and exhausted, hanging his head as Tay and Ming Tang watched him closely. They, too, had a sense of loss and devastation after such a horrific tale, and when they realized the story had come to a conclusion, they looked at one another in horror. When Fox had started his tale a few hours earlier, neither one of them could have guessed what would come out.

A forbidden bride.

The most powerful man in England.

A shattered heart.

It was too awful to believe.

“Did de Poyer do as he promised?” Tay finally asked, feeling as if he had no right to know but asking just the same. “If he has not, I will. I will ride to Canonsleigh this very day, Fox. I will tell Lady Gisele myself what happened.”

Fox lifted his head, moving his weary gaze out over the lake that was covered in mist that had formed during the tale. “He went,” he said. “He told Gigi that I was at Blackchurch and if she ever had need of me, to reach me here. But she never has. It has been ten years and she never has.”

“Have you spoken to Keller since that time?”

“He sends me a missive about once a year.”

“What does he say?”

“Unimportant things, really,” Fox said quietly. “He speaks of Wales and his family. One time, about five years ago, he spoke of the Marshal to say that he has never quite gotten over our disagreement.”

“Why?”

“I was his protégé,” Fox replied. “He knighted me personally when I was seventeen. I think he looked at me as a son, and when things soured between us, it was… difficult.”

“But not difficult enough that he would give you permission to marry.”

Fox shook his head and looked away. “Nay.”

Tay felt as bad as he possibly could. He looked to Ming Tang, a man of great wisdom, hoping he might have some words of comfort for Fox. The man had been hiding a giant of a secret that no one even suspected. It was little wonder he’d kept it all hidden. Taking the hint, Ming Tang rose from his rock and went to sit behind Fox, putting his hand on the man’s shoulder.

“It sounds as if Keller de Poyer gave you good advice,” he said. “He is your ally in this.”

“He is,” Fox agreed. “I do not know what I would have done had he not been at Pembroke when I arrived. Things could have been so much… worse.”

Ming Tang thought carefully on his reply. “Have you ever heard of karma, Fox?”

Fox shook his head. “What is it?”

“It is the philosophy that every action has a reaction,” Ming Tang said. “It is central to my religion and a few others. It means that men who do good will receive good.
